This medicine contains the active ingredient olanzapine which belongs to a group of medicines called atypical antipsychotics. These medicines affect the chemical balance in the brain by restoring it. Olanzapine is prescribed for the treatment of different mood disorders such as schizophrenia (you see, hear, feel things that do not exist, have strange and frightening thoughts, you are depressed and anxious, you cannot differentiate between fiction and reality) and mania (agitation, enthusiasm, hyperactivity, excitement, aggression).

Is Olanzapine suitable for me?

Olanzapine is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

  • if you have an allergy (hypersensitivity) to olanzapine or any other ingredient of this medicine
  • if you have eye problem glaucoma (pressure in the eye)

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

  • are pregnant or breast-feeding
  • have a history of blood clots
  • have blocked intestine (paralytic ileus)
  • have had a stroke
  • have heart problems
  • have problems with your liver
  • have ever had a fit (seizure)
  • have diabetes or have a risk of getting diabetes
  • have liver, kidney, or prostate problems
  • have a tumor on your adrenal gland (a condition called phaeochromocytoma)
  • have epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, raised pressure in your eye (glaucoma) or muscle weakness, called myasthenia gravis

Olanzapine interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Olanzapine?

This medicine is available in form of a orodispersible tablet and film-coated tablet.

You should take olanzapine exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. You will be prescribed a dose according to your condition and needs.

  • The usual dose is between 5 and 20 mg per day.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Olanzapine side effects?

Like all medicines olanzapine can cause side effects, including:      

Very common:

  • weight gain
  • sleepiness
  • increased levels of prolactin in the blood

Common:

  • increased appetite
  • dizziness
  • restlessness
  • tremor
  • problems with speech
  • unusual movement
  • constipation
  • dry mouth
  • rash
  • loss of strength
  • extreme tiredness
  • water retention
  • increased levels of sugar in the blood
  • feeling weak
  • swelling of arms or legs

Uncommon:

  • slow heart rate
  • sensitivity to sunlight
  • urinary incontinence
  • hair loss
  • absence or decrease in menstrual periods
  • changes in breasts
