Mesalazine

This medicine contains the active ingredient Mesalazine which belongs to a group of anti-inflammatory medicines. These medicines are used for the treatment and prevention of the inflammation of gastrointestinal tract, accompanied by ulcers of the intestine and pain in the stomach. Mesalazine is prescribed for the treatment of Ulcerative colitis (inflammation and ulcers in the colon) and Crohn`s disease (inflammation of the whole digestive tract, or just some of its parts). 

Is Mesalazine suitable for me?

Mesalazine is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• if you are allergic to Mesalazine, salicylates or other ingredients of this medicine
• if you are suffering from severe liver or kidney disease

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• have previously had inflammation of the heart
• have liver or kidney problems
• have narrowing or blockage of the stomach or the gut
• have lung problems
• are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breast feeding

Mesalazine interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Mesalazine?

This medicine is available in form of a film-coated tablet.

You should take Mesalazine exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. The usual dose for tablets is between 1,5 g and 3 g taken in the morning, at midday and in the evening, 1 hour before meals.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose. What are Mesalazine side effects?

Like all medicines Mesalazine can cause side effects, including:

Common:

• Abdominal pain,
• diarrhea,
• flatulence,
• nausea and vomiting,
• headache,
• fatigue

Rare:

• dizziness,
• chest pain,
• breathlessness,
• swollen limbs,
• problems with heart, lung, liver or kidney function,
• inflammation of the pancreas,
• blood abnormalities, 
• fever,
• sore throat,
• shortness of breath,
• cough, wheezing,
• skin rash or inflammation,
• muscle and joint pain,
• jaundice,
• hair loss,
• numbness and tingling in the hands and feet
